What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a conversational AI assistant made by OpenAI. Released in November 2022, it became the fastest consumer product to reach 100 million users — and it is largely responsible for the mainstream AI boom that followed. You type a message (a question, a task, a rough idea) and it responds in natural language. It can write, explain, summarize, code, translate, brainstorm, and much more.

Under the hood, ChatGPT runs on OpenAI's GPT family of large language models. The current flagship is GPT-4o ("omni") — a single model that handles text, images, and voice. It is fast, highly capable, and the default model for paying subscribers.

Step-by-step setup

1. Go to chat.openai.com and click Sign up.
2. Create a free account with your email, Google, or Apple account — no credit card needed.
3. Verify your email if prompted, then log in.
4. Type your first message in the box at the bottom of the screen and press Enter.
5. To upload a file: click the paperclip icon next to the text box. Supported formats include PDFs, Word docs, images, and CSVs.
6. To try a GPT: click Explore GPTs in the left sidebar, search for a topic (e.g. "resume writer" or "SQL helper"), and click Start Chat.
7. Optional: upgrade to ChatGPT Plus in your account settings for GPT-4o, image generation, and higher limits.

A mobile app is also available for iOS and Android if you prefer chatting on your phone.

Key features

GPTs (custom AI apps) — The GPT Store hosts thousands of specialized AI tools built on top of ChatGPT. There are GPTs for writing cover letters, generating meal plans, explaining legal documents, and hundreds of other jobs. You can also build your own with no code required.

Image generation (DALL·E) — Plus subscribers can generate images directly in the chat. Describe what you want and DALL·E 3 renders it. Useful for social media graphics, concept visuals, or just experimenting with ideas.

Web browsing — Plus users can turn on browsing to let ChatGPT pull current information from the web. Useful for news, recent events, or checking whether something has changed since its training data.

Memory — ChatGPT Plus can remember things you tell it (your job, your preferences, recurring projects) and apply that context to future conversations without you having to repeat yourself.

Advanced Data Analysis — Upload a CSV or spreadsheet and ask questions in plain English. ChatGPT will write and run Python code behind the scenes, then return charts, summaries, and insights. No coding knowledge required.

The more context you give, the better the output. Treat it like briefing a smart contractor — vague briefs produce vague results.
